Let's start off with a quick quiz! Do you know what festival the picture on this page is from? Quick, call your child! Ask them if they know! Give them this hint: the festival happens in Valencia, Spain, on Saint Joseph's Day. Do they know what it is?
('Jeopardy' theme plays...)
Ding ding ding!
Did they say Las Fallas (Fah-yahs)? They should be able to tell you all about this Spanish festival, and what it's for.
Las Fallas is one of the cultural aspects that we have discussed this year. Understanding the culture of Spanish speakers is just as important to communication as learning the language itself.
Speaking of language, your child has learned quite a bit this year. At the beginning of the year, we worked on building some simple vocabulary--like colors, numbers, and days of the week. We will continue practicing these skills to make sure they stay nice and sharp.
Right now, your child is learning to build simple sentences, with a subject, verb, and even some adjectives! We have learned several physical and personality adjectives, as well as "people" words, like "man," "woman," "girl," "boy," etc. I bet you'd be surprised at what they can say!
Test them! See if they can say...
"I am tall" (yo soy alto [or alta, if your child is a girl]
"She is short" (ella es baja)
Did they get them? Great! [or, if not, we'll keep trying!]
Try this!
What does this mean?
El chico es inteligente (the boy is smart)
La chica es sociable (the girl is friendly/sociable)
Hopefully they could get some of those words! We will keep trying to build up that vocabulary!
Adios, amigos! Hasta luego!
