4Assante:
Hi parents! Today in class we began by answering the two questions we learned last week: "¿Cómo te llamas?" and "¿Cómo estás?" Almost everyone was able to answer both questions with little difficulty.
Next, we talked a bit about the history of the Spanish language. Students learned that it is a Romance language (impacted heavily by Latin), but that it has also been influenced by Arabic. They learned that Spanish is spoken by over 400 million people in the world. They also learned that, although the Spanish language originated in Spain, it was brought over to Latin America by Columbus and others like him.
We also talked a little bit about the difference between the words Spanish, Hispanic, and Latino/a. Ask your child if he or she knows the difference and if they can tell you what it is.
Spanish- From Spain or of Spanish ancestry
Latino/a- From Latin America or of Latin American ancestry
Hispanic- From a culture that has been heavily impacted by Spanish culture (includes both Spanish and Latino/a)
Finally, we practiced with our greetings and responses from last class. I collected the worksheet we used in order to grade it, but it will be returned next week if you are curious!
